I’m interested in settings and how people relate to places. Sometimes a painting is of a specific place because it’s a certain memory, sometimes the setting is a an imagined composite of many places.
Mikey Yates (b. 1992, Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Germany; Lives and works in Kansas City, MO) has a BFA from Missouri State University and an MFA at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Yates’ recent solo exhibitions include Overtime, Shulamit Nazarian, Los Angeles, CA, Boomerang, Taymour Grahne, London, UK and Hard in the Paint, Rule Gallery, Marfa, TX. His work has been featured in group exhibitions at the Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, OH; Shulamit Nazarian, Los Angeles, CA; The Hole, New York, NY; Taymour Grahne, London, UK; COMA Gallery, Sydney, AUS; Steven Zevitas Gallery, Boston, MA; and 1969 Gallery, New York City, NY.
Yates’ deeply emotional and resonant figurative paintings are love songs to small moments of hope or peacefulness that encourage optimistic living. His artworks capture points in time imbued with feelings of wonderment, awe and most importantly significant and wholehearted connection.
