Shan Turner-Carroll will build upon previous works to create an experimental new body of work, showing at COMA from 15 October 2021. The exhibition is supported by a grant provided by Art Incubator.
Art Incubator was established by collectors and philanthropists Teresa and Andre Biet as an initiative to provide a financial grant and mentorships to two or three emerging artists annually. The program concludes with an exhibition organised by the initiative at a major commercial gallery.
Based between Sydney and regional NSW, Shan Turner-Carroll is an Australian artist of Anglo-Burmese descent who works in photography, sculpture, installation and performance to embody the role of the trickster, magician or pilgrim. The artist uses the human body, common gestures and everyday objects in alchemical ways, perceiving the process of art-making as ritualistic and transformative.
The Art Incubator grant is the latest of a growing list of accolades bestowed upon the emerging artist, including the Margaret Olley Memorial Scholarship (2014); finalist in the 2017 NSW Visual Arts Emerging Fellowship at Artspace; the Doctor Harold Schenberg Scholarship, Perth Institute Of Contemporary Art (2017), and most recently, a Creative Live Work Space tenancy with Brand X and the City of Sydney.
