Jack Lanagan Dunbar: Pantheon
-
Pantheon is a full display of a new body of work that Lanagan Dunbar has used to communicate a built up personal cosmology through reference to existing mythologies and figures of importance in these legends. Stories and the individuals experiences in these tales become analogous to points in the artists own recent history and through this a belief system, both known and created, is articulated.
With a focus on history and memory experienced through material the physical works in Pantheon convey a sense of time and antiquity. Etched and worked metal plates evoke ancient smelters whose soot has built up on the surfaces and with regular disturbances makes its way around the inside of the frame. Expressve mark making leads the viewer into speculating whether figurative elements are indeed present or not while gyrating nexuses of acrylic paint elicit thoughts of mythical titans in some sort of embrace that is both violent and romantic all at once.
