Puuni Brown Nungarrayi & Jane Yang D'Haene: Melbourne Art Fair

  • COMA is pleased to be participating in this year’s Melbourne Art Fair, with a two-person presentation by New York-based artist Jane Yang D’Haene and Indigenous Australian artist Puuni Brown Nungarrayi, on view 20 - 23 February, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. You can find the gallery at booth K4.

Exhibited together for the first time, Nungarrayi and Yang D’Haene both use art making as a vessel for personal story telling, Nungarrayi reimagining her mother’s Kapi Tjukurrpa (Water Dreaming) through repetitive circular forms and Yang D’Haene investigates her Korean heritage, in particular traditional ceramic forms such as the dal hang-ari (Moon Jar).

Puuni Brown Nungarrayi (b. 1979) is of the Luritja language group and grew up watching her mother and prominent Western Desert artist, Isobel Gorey, paint. Reinventing and reimagining her mother’s Kapi Tjukurrpa (Water Dreaming), she has crafted a visual language distinctly her own, cultivating and nurturing one of the most significant art movements in Australian history.

Kapi Tjukurrpa (Water Dreaming) is a knowledge form passed down through generations, telling stories of water sources; a billabong, watering hole, stream or river – how to find them, replenish them and sustain them. Circular forms and motifs to represent these different forms of water have become a constant within Papunya painting, reoccurring again and again to emphasise the necessity and importance of water to sustain and nurture life amongst the dry red desert. In a broader sense the concentric circles allude, both directly and indirectly, to an all encompassing life cycle – everything is eternal.

Jane Yang D’Haene creates stoneware vessels drawing upon her Korean heritage. Though descended from traditional Korean ceramic forms, such as the dal hang-ari or moon jar, D’Haene’s vessels depart from this history as she experiments with surface, form, and technique. D’Haene seeks to transform the emotional experience of memory into the physical. Through abstraction and experimentation, D’Haene creates new visions of place and self, expanding on her earliest influences and extending across her lived experience, cultural identity, and creative practice.

In 2023, D'Haene's work was selected by Vice President Kamala Harris to be a part of the art collection of the Vice President's residence. Recent solo exhibitions include: Hauser & Wirth, Southampton, NY (2023 & 2024); Harvard Art Museum, Cambridge, MA (2024); Maya Frodeman Gallery (formerly Tayloe Piggott Gallery), Jackson Hole, WY (2022 & 2024); Mindy Solomon Gallery, Miami, FL (2024); Galerie Italienne, Paris, France (2023); The Future Perfect, Los Angeles, CA (2023); Bienvenu Steinberg & J, New York, NY (2023); The Future Perfect, New York, NY (2023); Alison Bradley Projects, New York, NY (2022); Maud & Mabel, London, England (2022); and Stroll Garden, Los Angeles, CA (2022).
